Curved Oak and Freestanding Glass Balustrade Staircase

Curved Oak and Freestanding Glass Balustrade Staircase

A Modern Curved Oak and Freestanding Glass balustrade Staircase completed and installed in Dublin.  The JEA staircase fits perfectly into the modern house style.  Oak timber and the glass balustrade compliments other materials used in the house interior.   The mixture of materials used in the architecture of the house calls out for a dramatic staircase.  The plants around the stairs are further showed off because of the glass.

Mono String Staircases

Mono String Staircases

An increasingly popular contemporary  style of staircase is the Mono string staircase, I suspect part of the reason for this is that it goes a long way towards satisfying customers desires for a minimalist floating tread style staircase, which would have been satisfied traditionally by a full cantilevered staircase. Although the full floating tread effect of a cantilevered stairs will always be the ultimate in minimalist staircase design a mono string  staircase, especially when combined with glass or steel balustrade offers a more than acceptable alternative.

Budget Staircases

Budget Staircases

In these recessionary times, generally the first consideration when specifying your stairs is “how much will it cost”. There’s no getting away from the fact that a feature staircase normally involves a considerable outlay. The main reasons for this are the fact that a custom staircase is in effect a very large bespoke piece of fitted furniture, which does not, by it’s unique nature, lend itself to mass production. In addition to this if expensive materials are selected like hardwoods, specialist glass, stainless steel etc. the size of a large staircase means there is considerable cost incurred before design and manufacture even begin. The aim of this post is to show how, by clever design it is possible to reduce the cost of a large feature staircase, without making it look cheap. The first thing to look when trying to reduce costs is the materials , there is no point in trying to make a inexpensive staircase when the design requires six thousand euros of materials. Sometimes a small amount of hardwood combined with a paint finish is enough raise an ordinary basic stairs to a higher level. Here a plain pine painted stairs with the addition of stained oak handrail and newel caps achieves a luxury feel at minimum cost.

The next consideration is design of the actual stairs. A lot of customers are aiming for a modern minimalist look, this should, you would think, be less costly than an elaborate intricate design, but what often happens is that in striving for the ultimate clean pared back look expensive solutions are used, like cantilevered floating treads which require complicated super strong support structures or self supporting glass balustrade which, because of the thickness required, is an expensive material.

Slimline Floating Tread

Here the use of a simple mild steel slimline string combined with stained laminated oak treads achieves a light floating effect at a fraction of the cost of a fully cantilevered stairs. I hope these examples show how budget staircases can still be special staircases.

Square Painted Spindle Mahogony Stairs with Storage

Square Painted Spindle Mahogony Stairs with Storage

This Client locataed between  Monkstown and Blackrock , in County Dublin wanted to refurbish her tired 1950’s staircase with something fresh but still in keeping with the style of the house. I suggested incorporating some under stairs storage solutions to help de-clutter the hallway. By being smart about the design of the storage solution I managed to incorporate 3 custom pull out units for storage of shoes, hoover, schoolbags, coats and jackets. For the new balustrade I choose a simple square painted spindle up-cycled the existing mahogany handrail by adding some reclaimed mahogany and staining and lacquering in the workshop to achieve a consistent tone.

Curved Staircase for Attic Refurb

Curved Staircase for Attic Refurb

The brief from the client was to replace the existing  non compliant attic stairs with an elegant feature stairs. The fitting of a curved staircase for Attic Refurb with a wreathed handrail enables compliance with  building regulations in a very confined space avoiding the need for alterations to the landing area. For aesthetic as weCurved Staircase for Attic Refurbll as cost reasons we decided to use a combination of stained oak treads and handrail with painted strings risers and spindles. As an option, we also supplied this customer with under stairs storage units, for the storage of coats, hoover, toys etc.
